Pergola foundation

A pergola or canopy without concrete pads

A pergola or canopy stands on a few posts but catches a lot of wind. Ground screws with a head plate replace the concrete pads: the posts are bolted on straight away.

Timber garden pavilion with a covered terrace

Why no concrete?

  • No holes to dig and no concrete pads
  • Posts bolted on at once, no curing time
  • Strong in tension: holds the canopy down in wind
  • Also on a terrace or next to a driveway
  • Removable if the pergola ever moves

Which foundation?

PRO ground screws

Ø 89 or 114 mm with a 220 mm head plate and M24 bolt, under every post.

LGT ground screws

For an open timber pergola, lighter LGT screws are often enough.

Wind

A closed canopy or louvred roof gets uplift from the wind. We take that into account in your quote.

Frequently asked questions

How many ground screws does a pergola need?

Usually one per post. The pile calculator gives an indication for your dimensions.

Can a pergola go on an existing terrace?

Often yes: we screw between or next to the tiles or boards, depending on the build-up.

Is wind a problem?

Ground screws are strong in tension. With a closed roof we take the uplift into account.
