Ground screws

Ground screws: foundations without concrete

A ground screw is a steel tube with a thread that is screwed into the ground. No digging, no concrete and ready to load at once. We work with ground screws from Weenk Schroef Funderingen (WSF) in the Netherlands, up to Ø 140 mm and extendable.

What is a ground screw?

A ground screw has a continuous thread at the bottom of the tube. The thread grips the ground and carries the load through friction and the tip. At the top a steel head plate takes beams, posts or a frame.

For light and medium structures it is the fastest foundation there is: a few minutes per screw, and you build on the same day.

What are ground screws used for?

  • Timber terraces and decks
  • Pergolas, canopies and carports
  • Garden sheds, log cabins and stores
  • Garden offices, pool houses and tiny houses
  • Solar panels on a frame in a field or garden
  • Fences, signs and light steel structures

Which type of ground screw?

Click a type: the animation shows the ground screw under a typical structure, the steps explain why.

LGT Ø 76

Light and fast

  • 0.8 to 3.5 m, 180 or 145 mm head plate
  • With an electric screwing machine
  • Garden sheds, terraces, fences, play equipment

PRO Ø 89/114

The all-rounder

  • Ø 89 or 114 mm, 5 mm wall, 1 to 3 m
  • 220 mm head plate with M24 bolt
  • Carports, canopies, garden offices, solar panels

PRO Ø 140

For heavy structures

  • Ø 140 mm, the heaviest from WSF
  • With an excavator and drive head
  • Modular homes, extensions, chalets, steel structures

V-series (extendable)

Extendable in soft ground

  • Ø 76 to 140 mm, with extensions
  • Reaches the bearing layer
  • Tiny houses and structures on soft topsoil

Which machine?

How we install ground screws

  1. 01

    Setting out

Positions are set out to your plan, and we check for utilities.

  2. 02

    Screwing in

By hand-held machine, compact tracked machine or excavator with hydraulic drive head, depending on diameter and access. Even through a narrow passage.

  3. 03

    To level

All head plates are set to the same height with a laser.

  4. 04

    Build at once

No curing time: the structure can go on the same day.

How much does a ground screw carry?

That depends mainly on the soil, the diameter and the length. Our pile calculator gives an indication in one minute for terraces, sheds, carports, garden offices and tiny houses. For buildings we work from the soil data in consultation with your engineer. We record the installation torque of every screw.

Install them yourself?

You can also buy ground screws from us and install them yourself, with a machine you rent from us. We will gladly give you a short instruction.

Frequently asked questions

How deep does a ground screw go?

For buildings and structures that must not move, at least below frost depth, in practice 1.2 m or more. Short 0.8 m screws are only used for light applications such as fences.

Can a ground screw be removed?

Yes. You simply unscrew it, and it can be reused. No concrete is left in your garden.

Does it work in clay or on a slope?

Yes. In soft ground we choose a longer or extendable screw. On a slope the adjustable head brings everything back to level.
