Battery storage foundation

Battery storage (BESS) on screw piles

Battery parks need to be built fast and often sit on soft or made ground. Instead of a concrete slab on hardcore, screw piles carry a steel frame to which the containers are fixed directly.

Rows of steel container frames on screw piles at a BESS site in Svebolle, Denmark

Why no concrete?

  • No concrete slab and hardly any earthworks: set out, check utilities and install
  • Up to about 50 piles per day per crew: the schedule stays under control
  • Pile heads aligned to 1–2 mm for a level container frame
  • Design based on CPTs, capacity measured per pile
  • Removable and reusable at end of life, 60–80% less CO₂

Which foundation?

Screw piles into the bearing layer

Also for a 44-tonne 20 ft container, in tension and compression.

Steel frame

Welded on site or fixed with clamp connections. Levelling plates on the pile heads give the alignment.

Design by the manufacturer

Based on CPTs, our manufacturer Paalupiste works out a foundation proposal, with your engineer.
